UN to Announce Polio-Eradication Initiatives Today
The increasing number of polio cases in Pakistan has become a concern for Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), as Pakistan has become the reservoir for poliomyelitis.
To assess WHO Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) program and its operations in Pakistan, the WHO Regional Director for Eastern Mediterranean Region, Dr. Hussein A. Gezairy has arrived on a mission to meet with the higher officials of Pakistan government, and other partners to commit on the coordinated efforts of working closely together in the activities of polio eradication from the country by the end 2011.
To reiterate the commitments of WHO and global partners, and to voice challenges facing this programme, a joint press conference by WHO, UNICEF and Ministry of Health will be held today (Tuesday), 31 May 2011, at 1700 hours in Faisal Hall, Serena Hotel, Islamabad. All concerned are requested to reach the venue half an hour before the given time for security clearance.
Dr. Hussain Gezairy, Regional Director for Eastern Mediterranean Region WHO; Dr Asad Hafeez- Director, Ministry of Health Pakistan; Dr Guido Sabatinelli, Representative WHO Pakistan and Dan Rohrmann- Representative, UNICEF Pakistan will speak on the occasion.
